Somerset Enterprises Ltd.

In the year 1993 resolve literally cast in stone, Lindeerth A. Powell persevered into making Somerset Enterprises Limited his empire.  Born in Succeed, Christiana, Manchester; Mr. Powell always had a passion for the quarrying and limestone business.  He operated quarries in Chudleigh, Manchester, St. John’s in St. Catherine, Salt River in Clarendon and block-making factories in Chudleigh and Spalding before stumbling upon the undeveloped Somerset property.

Somerset is located approximately three (3) miles west of Mandeville.  With his immense knowledge of the quarrying and limestone business, he acquired the property.  With the assistance of his wife Pauline (deceased 2005) and a small staff, they worked side by side to develop Somerset Quarry.  The astute businessman, although facing many obstacles, set about the task with diligence and within three (3) years was very successful in producing aggregates from limestone deposits. Somerset’s primary mission is mining and crushing of stones into various grades and sizes for distribution to his valued customers. The Company is the largest limestone quarry in Central Jamaica.

Somerset’s limestone was used in the building of the Old Harbour Bypass (Highway 2000), The North Coast Highway and the extension of the runway at the Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James, and also the resurfacing of many other roads island wide.  Somerset’s limestone may also be used in the sugar industry, glass manufacturing, bauxite industry, flu glass, water purification and in the iron and steel industry.

The company marked another milestone with a dedication ceremony on October 8, 2005 at their new offices in the lower section of the Somerset Quarry.  A corporate office was established at Shop 14 & 15 Midway Mall, 17 Caledonia Road, Mandeville, Manchester shortly after.
