Railway Ballast
Substantial amount of coarse Somerset aggregates has been used as railway track ballast, where the ballast layer supports and maintains alignment of the railway track and provides free draining base. This requires a strong angular aggregate with high resistance to abrasion.
Other Uses Of Limestone
In addition, the foregoing limestone and lime can be used in the following industries and processes sugar refining. In the sugar industry as part of the purification process lime and carbon dioxide (obtained by calcimining the limestone) are used to adjust PH and to assist in the precipitation of impurities.
Glass Manufacturing
Most glass is made by fusing a mixture of silica, sand and soda ash, limestone and dolomite. Limestone acts as a flux allowing the mixture to melt at a relatively low temperature.
Flu Gas Desulphurization
Iron and steel: limestone or lime is used as a flux to assist melting in the extraction of iron from iron ore.
Fillers and pigments: limestone is relatively ground to fine powder which is non-toxic, chemically inert and generally white in colour. Summary of limestone uses: Based on the chemical analyst undertaken. The Somerset team is committed to excellence in customer service.
